Grab a notepad and sketch your layout. Measure each wall corner to corner and check the floor-to-ceiling height. Note windows, doors, and openings — this way, your cabinets fit the space without guesswork.

You don’t need much. A tape measure, pencil, and paper usually do the job. A level helps too. With these, you can take down accurate numbers for smooth cabinet planning.

Start by checking the total wall height. Then mark the space you want to keep between the counter and cabinet bottom, usually around 18 inches. Write down the width and height for each wall section.

Measure the wall at floor level from end to end. Mark sinks, windows, and doors. Floors aren’t always even, so check heights along the wall — this keeps your base cabinets lined up properly.

Take the exact size of your fridge, stove, and dishwasher. Note width, depth, and height. Leave a little breathing space so doors open easily and nothing feels squeezed.
